Summer Roof Maintenance

What Homeowners Should Check Before Fall

Summer heat, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds can all take a toll on your roofing system. Taking care of small problems now can help prevent bigger, more expensive repairs later in the year.

1. Look for Missing or Damaged Shingles

Strong summer storms can loosen, crack, or remove shingles. From the ground, look for shingles that appear out of place, curled, cracked, or noticeably different from the rest of the roof.

2. Check for Signs of Water Damage

After periods of heavy rain, check your attic and ceilings for signs of moisture. Water stains, damp insulation, peeling paint, or a musty smell can indicate a roofing leak.

3. Clean and Inspect Your Gutters

Your gutters play an important role in protecting your roof and home from water damage. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can prevent water from draining properly.

4. Check Your Roof Flashing

Flashing helps keep water out around areas where the roof meets chimneys, vents, skylights, and other structures. Damaged or deteriorated flashing can become a common source of leaks.

5. Trim Overhanging Tree Branches

Trees provide welcome shade during the summer, but branches hanging over your roof can create problems. During a storm, branches can fall and damage shingles or other roofing components.

6. Don’t Ignore Small Roofing Problems

A minor roofing issue may not seem urgent, especially if your roof isn’t currently leaking. However, small problems can become much more serious when exposed to months of rain, wind, ice, and snow.
