Window Replacement Options For New England Homes

When it comes to choosing new windows, there are tons of options for a range of New England homes. Whether your priority is the views, ventilation, or easy opening, there are many window types to fit any home. This week, we’re identifying the top window replacement options for 2022.

Double-Hung

Especially in New England, double-hung windows are a leading and popular option. Two separate sashes hang on one frame, then slide up and down for easy use. The main advantage of double-hung windows is that they provide excellent ventilation. With both sashes opened about halfway, air naturally flows through the lower opening and out through the upper opening. Double-hung windows can also be cleaned inside and out without cleaning from the outside. They work well in most locations and have a classic decorative look.

Casement

Casement windows operate with a single sash attached to the frame on one side. Using a crank, they swing open just like a door, with the screen located on the inside. Many casements have relatively large glass panes to provide ample light uninterrupted by mid bars or other framings. These windows typically offer more open ventilation areas than other window types. Closed and locked casement windows can make a very effective seal for improved energy performance.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are an excellent resource for architects to create angles and projections on a building structure. Bay windows allow light to enter at different angles, and most bays include side windows that can be opened for airflow. Bays are commonly used in kitchens and family rooms where the large sill of the window can be used for plants or a window seat.

Awning

One awning windows open out by pivoting from the top of the window sash operated by a crank. This style is desirable for regions with inclement weather since they can even be opened when it’s rainy but are not recommended for use near walkways or other high-traffic areas.

Sliders

Sliders optimize the amount of glass and provide tons of natural light, and are great for utilizing the maximum amount of light and views outside. They are a simple design and don’t have a lot of mechanics aside from a lock and seals. Their simplicity distinguished them as one of the most affordable windows on the market.
